The Tuba Thieves

October 10, 2023 7PM at Wexner Center for the Arts

A man in a dark winter coat stands inside a small room with his hand holding a cell phone up his ear. In his other hand, a black instrument case. In front of him are several open and empty large instrument cases.

Art Possible Ohio, in partnership with Wexner Center for the Arts, invites you to the Columbus premiere of Deaf filmmaker Alison's O'Daniel's film, "The Tuba Thieves," as part of our 2023 ReelAbilities Film Festival Columbus line-up. Don't miss this interactive, sensory experience! O'Daniel's will join the film audience for an interactive talkback following the film.

Inspired by a series of mysterious tuba thefts across Los Angeles high schools, O’Daniel’s visually stunning and sonically surprising film The Tuba Thieves mixes documentary, narrative, and essay filmmaking. Rather than exploring the mystery, the film, according to O’Daniel, is “about listening, but it is not tethered to the ear. It is a film about Deaf gain, hearing loss and the perception of sound in Los Angeles.” Through her uniquely creative use of captioning, sound, and silence, she asks viewers to consider the experiences of those who are deaf and hard of hearing.

When: October 10, 7PM.
Where: Wexner Center for the Arts (1871 N High St, Columbus, OH 43210)
Access: American Sign Language, English, and Spanish with open captions. The film was created with open captions and an audio description track. A limited number of audio description headsets will be available from staff at the back of the theater. Balloons will also be available to audience members who wish to feel the film’s soundtrack.

For additional accommodation request contact accessibility@wexarts.org or call (614) 688-3890.

Tickets: Free and required. Find tickets at the following link: https://wexarts.org/film-video/tuba-thieves
Parking: The Wex will validate parking if you park at any Campus Parc garage.

Co-presented with the Wexner Center for the Arts and Ohio State’s Global Arts and Humanities Discovery Theme: Art, Technology, and Social Justice

Allison O'Daniel, a white woman with round black glasses and long curly brown hair stands in front of some woods. She is wearing a black top and has a necklace with five intercepting rings in a line.

Director Allison O'Daniel will join the audience for a Q+A following the film screening.

ASL will be provided during the talkback.
