Event Details

Join ReelAbilities Film Festival Columbus and We Amplify Voices for a fun, family-friendly afternoon on July 19, 2025! Enjoy a powerful coming-of-age film followed by an inspiring Open Mic session led by Cynthia Amoah – everyone’s welcome to share and celebrate diverse voices.

Feature Film:

Magnetosphere

Film Description:

Maggie experiences a world where sounds burst into colors and images become melodies. Initially thinking this is something she should hide, Maggie finds unexpected strength in her father’s eccentric theater production, newfound friends, and an understanding teacher. Through their support, Maggie learns to embrace her unique perception, discovering that her ‘different’ way of experiencing the world isn’t something to fear—it’s a gift worth celebrating.

Open Mic:

After the film join us for an open mic led by Cynthia Amoah.

Cynthia Amoah is a spoken word artist, educator, and mentor originally from Ghana. Since the onset of her career, Cynthia’s dynamic voice has captured diverse audiences and her authentic stage presence has left them inspired after every performance. Her literary pieces often highlight the forgotten stories of the world, while transcending the oftentimes marginalized groups she delineates in her work. Her writing and performances also concern the foraging questions that have to do with identity and belonging, with displacement, migration and uprootedness.

Cynthia completed her MFA at The New School and has been featured on the stages of TEDxDrewUniversity, TEDxOhioStateUniversity, and the United Nations Information Center in Accra, among many. In 2016, she served as a writer for Maroon Arts Group’s writer’s residency, where she joined seven other writers in the creation of a social-justice centered choreopoem that came to life on the stage in June 2018. In December of the same year, Cynthia also debuted an all-woman poetry showcase, “Women & Words,” featuring Ghanaian writers, poets, and artists in Accra.

Cynthia has received honorable mention for the Paul Violi Poetry Prize in 2018 and was cited for Excellence in Poetry by The New School in 2019. Her work has been published or is forthcoming in OURS Magazine, Nimrod Journal, Crab Orchard Review, Ohio Humanities: Pathways, and The African Poetry Book Fund’s New-Generation African Poets Chapbooks by Akashic Books. Cynthia currently resides in Columbus, OH with her family where she facilitates workshops in poetry, positive-thinking, confidence-building, and the power of using our voice.
