A large black‑and‑white drawing is divided into three horizontal sections. In the top section, two trees frame a starry sky with several falling stars, each trailing curved white lines. Tree roots extend downward into the middle section, where a figure with long curling hair holds a small glowing star. Light radiates outward, illuminating the figure’s hands and face. In the bottom section, a smaller figure stands at the edge of a forest, holding another star that emits squiggling rays. The composition uses repetition of shapes and flowing lines to connect sections. The drawing is framed in flat black wood.

Artist Statement

This illustration captures a scene from The Night Before Dawn, my in-progress illustrated speculative memoir exploring the process of healing after trauma. The book follows a journey through an imagined world, where light and darkness guide us through pain and growth. Though part of a larger narrative, this piece stands alone as a reflection on resilience, renewal, and the rekindling of inner strength. In this moment, The Star has fallen from the sky and begins to reclaim her light, a quiet yet powerful act of self-awakening that symbolizes the courage to rise again after enduring darkness.
