Workshop Description:

Why limit our scientific and artistic discoveries to light rays bouncing into our brains, when we can explore our world with all our faculties combined? Through sharing excerpts from her novel and poetry, international journalist and nonvisual advocate Elizabeth Sammons will encourage creative thought through the four senses outside the visual arena we often take for granted. 

About Elizabeth: 

Doctors told Elizabeth Sammons’ parents to institutionalize her at birth; she was blind. Instead, they raised her with faith, a sense of self-respect and wonder, and a vast array of books. After graduating with a master’s degree in journalism from the Ohio State University, she worked with disability advocacy, journalism and teaching in Russia and Central Europe, including Peace Corps. Returning to the USA in 2000, Elizabeth pursued a federal and state government career, as well as becoming a long-term VSA board member, until 2018, when she gave in to living life as a writing artist. 

Sammons’ writings and research have been featured in Ethics in Journalism, Plough Quarterly, The Columbus Dispatch, and Word Gathering among others. Her first novel, The Lyra and the Cross was published in 2018.

Workshop Description:

Is your organization ready to jump back into summer programming with the return of outdoor events, festivals, and programs? Now is the perfect time to pause and consider ways to make your events more accessible to participants with disabilities. Join Art Possible Ohio staff, along with APO board member, Andrew Hall of Ohio History Connection, as we offer some essential tips for creating and planning accessible outdoor opportunities. Hall will also provide prime examples from his years of event-planning at the outdoor Ohio Village in Columbus, Ohio. Join us! Bring your great ideas, questions, and conundrums and we’ll help you work through them

About Andrew Hall, co-presenter: 

Andrew has a BA in History from Bowling Green State University and an MA in American History from Miami University. He serves as the Coordinator of Ohio Village Operations at the Ohio History Connection. During his off hours, Andrew enjoys playing board games with his wife, leatherworking, and chilling at home with his two cats, Emily Lickinson and Frida Pawlo.
